We have heard about radiation damages. But few things are known about the benefits of radiation hormesis.
The good news is that the hormesis beginning is based on the use of toxic elements in small doses to strengthen health instead of damaging it. So, it may be strange, but there are science evidences of a real benefit in the ionizing radiation exposition. In fact, there are opponents on this issue that come into direct conflict with the non-threshold line (NTL), which needs to be assumed for more than 50 years to be considered as true.
No eagerness to get involved in scientific issues, the reality is that taking an x-ray to have a diagnosis, represents a minor risk. The use of the NTL model maintains in the report from 2005 of the United States National Investigation Center that “there will exist a risk, even in los doses (100 mSv or less), although there is a minimal risk”. The same report concludes that “…there is no direct proof of an increased risk of cancer illness in minimal doses”.
And, 100 mSv is a lot or a little? As a reference, any American is exposed to an average level of natural radioactivity of 3 mSv. The exposition of a thorax x-ray is 0.1 mSv, while that of a full-body computed tomography is approximately about 10 mSv. In both cases, the proportions stands out as a very small exposition when it is compared to the enormous benefits of the images obtained in studies that consider radiation. It is evident that from any perspective, the very small risks or health benefits associated with the exposure of x-rays are likewise very small when they are compared with the invaluable information for diagnoses and follow-ups.
